Elwoodettes Marionettes - Max, the Ho Hum Husky

Max, our much-loved family pet was the inspiration for fourteen of the twenty Elwoodettes shows, and with his puppet look-alike, he made over 100 bows on the stage of the Bernie Legge Theatre.  A rescue dog with a difficult past, his antics kept us on our toes, and many people dined out on ‘Max’ stories over the years.  With some wolf in the mix, plus an Alpha male personality, we had to call for some help in the early days, and as his trainer, Gary Gibson said, “He was more dog than most.”

Max was not the only pet who was recreated as an Elwoodette Marionette.  His friend, Miss Brandy, who stars in many shows with him, was also a real dog, and the two walked together daily and shared many exciting adventures together.  Max's arch foe, Minx, the Manx, is alive and kicking, and her feud with Max was as lively off stage as on.  Max and Minx's predecessors, George and Beanie, appear as the pets' guardian angels in The Cinderella Caper, and Caesar, the mean tabby who appears in Guard Dog on the Spot and Guard Dog on Show  really did whack Max on the nose.  Last, but not least, Christmas Bunny from The Magical Christmas Forest and Egg Detector  was a real live rabbit.

However, Max, the Ho Hum Husky was the star of the shows and the character most closely identified with Elwoodettes Marionettes. Max loved his 'job' with the company, and whenever rehearsals began for a new show, he would race to the theatre and tuck himself under the stage, waiting for the moment when he would take his bow and receive his cookie. His last bow was after the final performance of The Christmas Present of Christmas Past on December 28, 2005, and something occurred that had never happened before.  A small boy in the audience cried out, 'Max', and started to run down the aisle, and all the other children followed suit.  So Max went out like a rock star, with a run on the stage for his final show.

Max was a wonderful dog and  is very greatly missed.  The bond he created with us was very deep, and there is no question that there are still ‘strings attached.’  We love you, Max.
